Doane’s MENC group is in full swing this semester and will be attending the NMEA convention in Lincoln, NE this week. The group has approximately 30 MENC members going to the convention this week.

The 15th annual Fall Festival of Winds was held last weekend in the Communications Building at Doane College. 175 students from 50 schools participated in the festival in two bands, the Honor Band and the Festival Band.

Doane’s MENC chapter has started off on the right foot this year. We have several events coming up and just finished the MENC student recital this past weekend. Students performed at two nursing homes which was followed by at banquet (get-together).

Our MENC chapter will be participating in Doane’s “Fall Festival of Winds” this semester under the instruction of Dr. Jay Gilbert. Students will be performing various tasks to make sure the event runs smoothly.

Doane’s MENC chapter will also be participating in the NMEA convention on the 20th through the 22nd of November in Lincoln, NE. Students will have the opportunity to attend sessions and rehearsals of the all the All-state performers.

We are very excited to have this new group of officers and know they will do a great job.

Also, at the meeting we discussed some ideas for next year. We hope to have more events, speakers and events for the music education majors and MENC members.

There will be a speaker here on May 1 at 6:00 and we would really like to encourage everyone to be there. She is a big wig with NMEA and is making a special trip to come speak to us. We’ve been trying to get her for three years and she is finally able to make it to Doane! More information about the speaker will come later.

An end of the year barbeque is planned for Sun, April 27, time TBA, at Emily Jones’ house. It’s going to be a blast and we would like everyone who can come to be there. An event will be made on Facebook for those who are planning on attending to RSVP.

The semester is coming to an end quickly. These events will be a good way to end the year on a good note (no pun intended) and get excited about next year.

Hello everyone!

At our February 28th meeting, we discussed ideas for speakers and service projects. We were mostly interested in coming up with some topics that were of interest to the group. These ideas ranged from motivation and classroom management to Orff instruments, teaching orchestra, and harmonica instruction as an alternative to recorder instruction. Ideas for service projects included doing a highway pickup, doing a “music in our schools”-type activity, or performing at area nursing homes.

Any further input on either of these two issues is warmly welcomed and encouraged!

Next, the Collegiate Chair of MENC, Jody Neel, has asked me to go over some questions with you regarding NMEA. They are:

-What changes would you like to see in the Collegiate Day format?  Do you like the recital or has it lost its appeal?  Are exhibits an important part of Collegiate Day?  Do you find the conducting session valuable?  What session topics would you like to see?

-What would make people from your chapter run for Collegiate Chair?  Should we instate a delegate system for voting?  Should it be required that all voting members attend every session?  How can I encourage student attendance at all sessions?

Please let me know if you have any responses to any of these questions, or you could just comment on this post. We’ll go over them at our next meeting as well! Thanks everybody…I know you’re busy, but your participation is always appreciated.
